Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos bio je povjesničar umjetnosti, likovni kritičar, kustos, pisac i protokonceptualni umjetnik, član grupe Gorgona. Radio je kao kustos u uglednim zagrebačkim kulturnim ustanovama: Modernoj galeriji, Arhivu za likovnu umjetnost Jugoslavenske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti i u Galeriji seljačke umjetnosti – kasnije Galeriji primitivne umjetnosti, gdje je radio kao ravnatelj do 1964. godine. Kasnije preuzima i upravlja zbirkom „Benko Horvat“, a od 1971. godine vodi novoosnovani Centar za film, fotografiju i televiziju. Sudjelovao je u organizaciji Novih tendencija i uredništvu časopisa Bit i Spot.
Bašičevićevo umjetničko djelovanje počinje u srednjoj školi kada piše poeziju i kratke prozne tekstove. Tijekom rata nastaju njegova prva umjetnička djela: paysages de la mort i paysages de la guerre.
Pedesetih godina stvara niz radova (tabula rasa, alphabet, paysages, nostories, charts, negation de la peinture, pythagore) koje kasnije opsesivno ponavlja. Ti radovi/tekstovi, na različitim jezicima i pismima, uvijek oponašaju formu školske ploče ispisane kaligrafijom. Kao podlogu koristi razne materijale: ploče, papire, bilježnice, knjige, globuse. Uzima pseudonim Mangelos, koji koristi za svoj “privatni eksperiment”, nazvan no-art, u kojemu želi negirati sliku ispisujući je riječima.
