Marina Abaramovic was born in Belgrade in 1948. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade. She completed a Master’s degree in the art class of the painter Krsto Hegedušić in Zagreb. From 1971 to 1973 she worked and exhibited with the Group of Artists (E. Milivojević, N. Paripović, Z. Popović, R. Todosijević, and G. Urkom). She has been engaging in performance art since 1973, gaining a reputation for the exploration of physical and mental boundaries. She met Ulay in 1975 commencing a collaboration which ends in 1988 with the project The Great Wall Walk. In 1997 she was awarded a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for Balkan Baroque, a video installation and performance piece. She is active in video, performance, actions and body-art. Abaramovic lives in New York where she staged the groundbreaking 7 Easy Pieces, a reenactment series at the Guggenheim Musuem in 2005, and The Artist Is Present, a MoMA retrospective in 2010.
