Rudolf Fila (1932, Příbram na Morave – 2015, Bratislava) was a Slovak painter, graphic artists and illustrator, educator and author.
From 1950 to 1952, Fila attended the School of Applied Art in Brno, and from 1952 to 1958, the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava to the studio of prof. Ján Mudroch. In 1960 he began teaching at the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts in Bratislava. From 1990 to 1992, he ran a free painting studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. He became an associate professor in 1991.
Abstract Surrealism and Art Informel inspired Fila’s art. In the 1960s, he experimented with placing colour on the surface of the paintings, such as spraying, smearing and spots. Since 1964, he had started using a long-drawn linear gesture. Afterwards, he proceeded with overpainting existing artworks, either by repainting or suppressing them. From the 1970s, he created monochromatic paintings with parallel brush-strokes.
He was also a theorist and art critic. In 1979 he published Analýza výstavby výtvarného díla. Fila published several books on art and textbooks.
